My Seeing Eye Puppies

Since 1929, The Seeing Eye of Morristown, New Jersey has been a non profit organization which provides dog guides to the blind. The organization breeds its own German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Lab/Golden crosses. A key to its success is the volunteer puppy raiser program. Puppy raisers provide guidance and direction in the puppy's early development by teaching it basic obedience commands and exposing it to the world in which it will eventually work. Also provided are lots of love, attention, discipline and encouragement, creating a foundation for the dog's formal training as a Seeing Eye dog. At about 16 to 18 months, the dog returns The Seeing Eye for formal harness training by professional trainers. Once the puppy has "graduated" the program, it is partnered with a blind person and helps them maintain an active, productive lifestyle.

The Seeing Eye/4-H Puppy Raising Program is a joint effort of The Seeing Eye and the 4-H Youth Development Program. Since 1995, I have been actively raising these precious puppies. To date I have raised 13.
