I am not exactly certain as to what this is.
I would surmise some sort of insect has burrowed into the branch and is now calling it home.
*A huge thanks to Sharon @ sprouts and wildlings for ID; it is a praying mantis egg case, or ootheca.

It almost looks spongy. The first thing that came to mind is the food tripe. Cool details in this.

It does look like an insect home. Neat photo.

Hey! It's an ootheca. It's the egg case of a praying mantis. I believe the mantis makes the ootheca itself and it's just supported on the twig; it's not like a gall where an insect will mess with a plant's hormones to get the plant to create a structure for it. Cool photo! Happy Macro Monday.
