Was there success?

On this bone chilling day, curiosity got the better of me.

After yesterday’s manly display by Mr. Pintail, I needed to head back to the refuge to check him. Had he been successful in finding a mate?

I climbed up the observation tower,

Took a look around,

Spied the Hooded Merganser, who yesterday was to shy to be photographed.

Got him! But where was Mr. Pintail?

Off wining and dining his new friend.
Love is in the air.

Just Ducky:

I sat in pre-calculus class staring out the window, and while this is nothing new, today it was raining. This made me think, “Weather only a duck would like”. After class, being in need of a break, I ventured out to the refuge to see if, in fact, ducks do like rainy weather.

As I started out along the 8 mile drive, my first encounter was with the Northern Shoveler. Although he looks quite similar to the Mallard, he was quickly recognized by his long spoon shaped bill. He and his Mrs. didn’t seem to be bothered by the raindrops. He had taken her to the best restaurant in town and they just went about bobbing under water looking for a quick little lunch. Driving on, I spotted the glossy green head of the Mallard. He sat with his bride, the two preening themselves. After straightening out their ruffled feathers, they waddled into the water. Seemingly, not even knowing it was raining. Mr. Pintail, holding his head high, looking all studdly with his long needle pointed tail feathers, glided along the water’s surface. Solo and with Spring not far off, surely he was in search of a lady friend. Rain, what rain? He was more concerned with the whereabouts of the girls.

The Hooded Merganser sat up among the reeds, sheltering herself from the rain. Or was she hiding from Mr. Pintail? The Canada Geese, in a gaggle, were making their usual honking noises. Possibly they were complaining about the drearily day, maybe not. A bright white Snow Goose, standing along the water’s edge, was staring off, perhaps she too had enough of calculus or perhaps she was using it to calculate the best path to her next meal.

As I neared the roads end, there in the small overflow pond swam the Bufflehead. Well, with a name like Bufflehead, do you even know it’s raining?

Honey ~ Nobeebody's Home:

Beekeepers here are, also, facing the sudden mysterious disappearance of their honeybees. These hives, once buzzing with activity, are now empty. This is a devastating loss to us all. "Read more."

Photo Friday: "Art"

One of my students recently gave me this beautiful picture. If only she had known what a priceless piece of “refrigerator art” it is.

Spring Retreats:

Winter irritated, by signs of Spring, sends in his mighty snow soldiers, Spring retreats, promising to gather up its forces and come back stronger.

The Weather Battle:

As winter's snow begins to fall, Spring continues to stand strong.

First Signs of Spring:

Although the forecast for this evening calls for a light dusting of snow, Spring manages to push its way through the partially frozen, leaf covered ground.

Anything but Studying:

Awards:

Recently, I was the recipient of two awards. L^2, "Dog's Eye View", awarded me with the "You Make My Day" and Emily, "Life with the Dogs", give me the "Thinking Blogger". Emily said, "Trish's photos always tell a story and definitely make you think!" I am honored and flattered. Thank you both.

As a recipient of these wonderful awards I am granted the privilege of passing them along to five other people. The difficultly here is, I have far more than 5 people to whom I can pass these along. Each of the blogs which I visit, often on a daily basis, bring me great joy. It is truly amazing the number of wonderful photos taken and talent of which “average” people can write.

I thank and award you all, for each of you “Make my Day” and make me “Think”.
